Stregenthen the EAC Integration Agenda -Kadaga

Rt.Hon Rebecca Kadaga (MP), 1DPM/Minister for East African Community Uganda.

The 1DPM/Minister for East African Community Affairs Uganda, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga is in Kisumu for a one-day work visit. The Minister started her tour of duty with a courtesy call to the County Governor of Kisumu H.E Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyongo’o at the county’s headquarters. The two discussed standardizing university courses, and modes of teaching within the EAC region. The County Governor also stated that to save the environment from water pollution and degradation, Kenya eliminated the use of plastic bags and soon plastic water bottles are going to be eliminated. Rt. Hon Rebecca Kadaga, the minister for water and environment Hon. Sam Cheptoris, and the technical staff team from MEACA- Uganda which was led by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Edith Mwanje, later proceeded on a guided tour to see progress on the ongoing construction of the LVBC headquarters. On a morning that seemed to be cloudy in Kisumu, The Minister later officiated in the meeting to review progress on and scope of the multi-lateral projects being undertaken on behalf of the EAC by the Lake Victoria Basin Commission at their offices in Kisumu. During the meeting, the LVBC outlined some challenges to sustainable development just to mention

  • Stresses within the lake – over-fishing, Water quality, fluctuating water level;
  • Stresses on littoral zones – construction and farming in shoreline, conversion of wetlands;
  • Stresses from basin – land degradation, deforestation, sediment loads;
  • Climate change (floods and severe droughts) and
  • Population Explosion.

Rt.Hon. Rebecca Kadaga who assured the LVBC of following up on the issues raised and finding immediate solutions was in Kisumu in her capacity as Minister for EAC- Uganda.
