PRESIDENT MUSEVENI ASSUMES CHAIR OF THE 19TH NAM SUMMIT

The 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is held in the Ugandan capital of Kampala under the theme: Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence. Featuring 50 heads of state and government as well as regional agencies who will deliberate on re-balancing international relations.

President Yoweri Museveni in his address said that the emergence of the NAM was a necessary antidote to the irrational polarization of the world of that time between the Capitalist Western countries and the Communist, mainly Eastern countries. Museveni further said that the oppressors miscalculate when they use their temporary advantage in science and technology to think that they can use that to indefinitely oppress other people.

What is NAM?  Is a group of states that aimed to maintain their independence and did not formally align with either the US or the USSR is known as the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).  Established in 1961, the goal of NAM has been to “establish an autonomous route in global politics that would not lead to member States turning into pawns in the conflicts between the great powers;”

NAM is the second biggest grouping of various countries after the United Nations.
