On a warm November morning in Arusha, the 24th Ordinary Summit of the East African Community (EAC) Heads of State commenced with grandeur and a spirit of unity. The historic event brought together Presidents and Prime ministers from the member states of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan, all gathered to chart the course for the future of the region as this saw President of the Republic of Kenya H.E William Kipchirchir Samoei Arap Ruto elected as the new chairman of East African Community.
The summit began with a welcoming address by the host nation’s President, H E Samia Suluhu Hassan who underscored the summit’s significance in advancing regional cooperation and integration. Her words set the tone for the day, highlighting the summit’s theme: “Promoting Trade, Sustainable Development, and Peace and Security for improved Livelihoods.”
Throughout the day, the leaders engaged in robust discussions on key regional issues. Topics ranged from economic integration and trade barriers to regional security and infrastructure development. One of the significant highlights was the signing of several agreements aimed at enhancing cross-border trade and investment. The leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to the EAC Vision 2050, which aims to transform the region into an upper-middle-income area by 2050.

The atmosphere was charged with a sense of optimism as the leaders shared their progress and challenges. The summit provided a platform for honest dialogue and mutual support, with each leader bringing their unique perspectives and solutions to the table. A particularly poignant moment was the joint declaration on climate action, where the leaders pledged to take collective measures to combat climate change, acknowledging its impact on the region’s agriculture, water resources, and health. This declaration was met with applause, symbolizing a unified front in the face of global challenges.
The 24th Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State was not just a meeting; it was a testament to the resilience and ambition of the East African community. As the leaders departed, they carried with them a renewed commitment to the ideals of the EAC, ready to work together to build a prosperous and united East Africa.
