Mrs. Asiimwe Caroline a lecturer at Makerere University met the 1st Deputy Prime Minister and minister of East African Community Affairs Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga

This afternoon , Mrs. Asiimwe Caroline a lecturer at Makerere University met the 1^st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of East African Community Affairs – Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga at the Ministry’s offices located on Plot 31A-35A & 37A-39A Nile Avenue, 2^nd floor Kingdom Kampala Building.

One of Mrs. Asiimwe’s concerns was mainstreaming Kiswahili in Uganda’s National Agenda for regional Integration and sustainable development. She said “this is a project funded by the Government of Uganda through Makerere University Research and Innovations Fund.”.

On June 4^th.2021 while giving a speech on African Integration Day at Kololo Independence Grounds, President Museveni and Commander in Chief of the UPDF, urged Africans to use Swahili as a way to unify the continent. President Museveni further said Swahili was a “neutral language”, non-ethnic that “belongs to nobody”.

It is of no doubt that Uganda is part of the East African community and regional imperatives and integration needs have created the need and efficacy for Kiswahili as an official language and basics for sustainable development in the country.

One of the key points she noted out with concern include:

• Kiswahili needs to be institutionalized and mainstreamed in all government policies and programs
• There’s need for collaborations and linkages 
• Need for research 
• Kiswahili should be started at the primary level and be made an examinable subject at PLE.

RT. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga thanked Mrs. Asiimwe Caroline for her ideological mind-set on promoting Kiswahili in Uganda National agenda and assured the lecturer to follow up on matter by scheduling to meet stakeholders in the education sector.
