Marrakech, Morocco, became the epicenter of African pride and achievement as the African Heritage Awards unfolded at the prestigious Savoy Le Grand Hotel. The evening radiated a profound celebration as leaders and visionaries from across the continent gathered to honor African achievements. Among them, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, Uganda’s 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, stood out as she received the African Award for Good Governance. This recognition celebrated her exceptional leadership and resonated deeply with Uganda’s remarkable strides in women’s emancipation and governance.

Rt. Hon. Kadaga has long been a trailblazer and a symbol of resilience in Ugandan leadership. In 1984, she made history as the first woman in Uganda to open legal chambers, setting a precedent for women in the legal profession and shattering barriers that had long confined them to domestic roles. Her passion for justice led her to establish the Legal Aid Clinic of FIDA, a transformative initiative designed to support poor women in accessing legal services and empowering them to stand up for their rights.

In 2011, she achieved another milestone as the very first female Speaker of Parliament in the Republic of Uganda, paving the way for women to take leadership roles at the national level. Her groundbreaking journey continued internationally, where she chaired the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (Africa) Region, championing increased representation of women in national assemblies across the continent. She mirrored these efforts on the global stage, advocating for the same at the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (International), setting a remarkable example for leaders worldwide.

Her achievements have earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious African Speaker of the Year award in 2017, presented by the London School of Economics. This recognition highlighted her contributions as a fearless advocate for gender equality and inclusive leadership. Kadaga’s unwavering dedication to empowering women and promoting governance anchored in integrity has elevated her to the status of an icon in Uganda’s progress.
